Back stitch
Backstitch is used for creating an outline around a design, or part of a design, to add detail or emphasis. On a chart, it is usually indicated by solid lines surrounding the symbols. It is always added after the cross stitch has been completed, to prevent the backstitch line being broken by the cross stitch.
Outlining with backstitch is not always necessary, and is often a matter of taste. Avoid black for outlining, unless needed specifically for the design. Use colours that enhance, rather than overpower. Work over pairs of threads on evenweave, avoiding long stitches unless specified for details.
