Starting to the left of a vertical thread
When working on a single weave fabric (an evenweave such as linen), start stitching to the left of a vertical thread, i.e. a vertical thread which lies on top of the horizontal thread immediately above in the position shown by the star in the diagram. This makes it easier to see when you have made a mistake in counting, because every stitch will start in the same position relevant to adjacent threads of the fabric.
