Hardanger: Spider's web filling stitch
Spider's web is a traditional Hardanger filling stitch, often used with wrapped bars. Keep a note of the number of winds to maintain consistency.
1. Work three sides in Kloster blocks or wrapped bars, bringing the needle out as shown (A).
2. Cross the square diagonally, going under the fabric at the corner, bringing the needle out at B.
3. Return to A, winding the thread around the diagonal just formed, ready to complete the final side of the block, shown as a wrapped bar.
4. Bring the needle up at C and pass diagonally to D, then wind the thread around the diagonal to the centre (as shown in 3).M
5. Start weaving the spider's web around the diagonals as shown.
6. After three winds you may need to tighten and adjust the position of the winds to ensure they are even and centred.
7. When the web is complete, leave the stitch by winding around the diagonal as before.
