Hemstitch with horizontal threads removed

Hemstitch horizontal threads removed

When hemstitch is worked in rows, the horizontal fabric threads between the rows can be removed, leaving the vertical fabric threads. These can be left plain, or they can be used as the framework for a number of decorative filling stitches, such as tied hemstitch or zig-zag hemstitch.

To stitch the hemstitch rows, follow the diagram for hemstitching a raw edge(evenweave only), but cut the horizontal threads between the two rows, and re-weave them into the fabric, rather than trimming the fabric.
