Hardanger: Needleweaving

Needle Weaving

Needleweaving is used on the loose threads that are left when stitched Kloster blocks have been cut, especially over larger areas. The needleweaving creates covered bars, and the spaces left between the bars can then be filled with decorative stitches such as dove’s eye.

For the needleweaving, use a slightly finer thread than for the Kloster blocks. To weave a bar, bring the needle up in the centre of the loose threads and work over and under pairs of threads as shown in the diagram. After completing one bar, weave the next one at right angles to it, working around the design, taking care not to run threads across the back of the cut areas.
