Algerian eye
This pretty star-shaped stitch usually occupies the space taken by four cross stitches. It is worked in such a way that a small hole is formed in the centre (pull quite firmly). Working from left to right, work round each stitch in an anticlockwise direction, or vice versa. Algerian eye can be worked over one or two threads as shown.
The secret for perfecting Algerian eye is to work it by passing the needle down through the central hole, as shown in the diagram, and to take care that trailing threads do not cover this hole as you progress to the next stitch.
(Also known as star stitch and eyelet stitch.)
