Half Rhodes stitch with bar
This is a long smooth stitch which covers the fabric and is often used to fill in shapes.
Lay flat stitches side by side. Always come up the same side and down the other side, so that the back of the fabric is covered. In this way, the stitches will lie closely and neatly beside each other. You may like to experiment with the number of strands of thread used, to vary the effect – many strands can give an almost padded look. Take care not to pull satin stitch too tight; it is not intended to distort the fabric. It can be worked diagonally as shown, or horizontally, or vertically.
(Also known as damask stitch.)
