Rhodes stitch

Rhodes Stitch

Rhodes stitch gives a solid, slightly raised, three-dimensional effect, almost like a series of ‘studs’ on the fabric. It is particularly successful when worked in thread that has a sheen, to emphasise areas of light and shade. Each stitch is worked over squares of two, four or more threads of evenweave fabric. (Rhodes stitch does not work well on aida fabric.)

As the stitch is built up, working in an anticlockwise direction around the square, the centre becomes raised. Follow the sequence of stitching carefully. Maintain the same sequence for every stitch to achieve a uniform effect.
