Pattern Darning

I do not meet many people who still darn socks or other items! Sadly, we are a throwaway society and rarely repair damaged clothes. In the past, darning was almost an art form and children were taught to darn at school and in orphanages. It was quite possible that in the 19th century if you went in to service you would be expected to be able to mark linen and darn clothing.
Decorative darning is defintely an art form and darning samplers can fetch enormous sums.
